Handmade jewelry pricing – The time issue

Evaluating the time it took to fabricate a jewelry piece is quite straightforward. But evaluating the time it took to design the piece is quite complex. The design process involves many steps. To name only a few: drawing and photocopying designs, planning bails, ear wires and other findings, making assessments about size and texture, fabricating prototypes and refining design. Usually when I have in mind a new design I will first experiment with copper, then make a sterling silver set of jewelry based on the idea. There are cases in which I go on with the process and produce gold versions of the jewelry. So the process takes a lot of time yet this time should be divided among many jewelry pieces. Thus I am not sure how to put into the pricing equation the time it took to design.
