Several years ago when I became interested in anticlastic
methods for metal forming I found that it was "Oral Torah" only. That
is jewelers who wanted to learn this
practice had to attend a workshop instructed by one of the few available
experts. I found & read a number of professional journals related articles
but a systematically organized book was not available
For a long time there was a rumor
that Betty Helen Longhi & Cynthia Eid are in the process of writing such a
book. However the publishing date was not known.
Less than two months ago, I took the initiative and participated
in a workshop with Cynthia Eid (see related post). During the workshop she
happily announced that the book is ready and will be published in a few weeks.
As part of the course material we received a number of photocopied pages from
the book. I read these pages with much interest and they were great because of
the detailed explanations and the photos that contributed greatly to
understanding the text.
I intend to get a copy as soon as possible!
Formal description:
Two accomplished metalsmiths,
both with extensive teaching careers, have joined forces to provide a
comprehensive survey of the ways to form sheet metal. The 256-page text covers
a huge swath, from a basic dapped disk through synclasting, anticlasting and spiculums
to a raised vessel. Along the way, special attention is given to anticlastic
forming and the vocabulary first introduced by their mentor, Heikki Seppä.
Creative Metal Forming includes 35 detailed exercises to explain the basics and
as well as advanced nuances of each category. Metalsmiths Michael Good and
Nancy Linkin have each contributed demonstrations of their forming techniques.
