When I went online looking for an answer
to the question "How much should earrings weigh?" I was surprised to
discover that people wear earrings so heavy that they cause substantial damage
to their ears. I confess I did not know that there is a product aimed at
supporting heavy earrings.
Although books & journals refer to a
great many aspects of the design and manufacture of jewelry, I do not remember coming
upon guidelines addressing this issue. I found very few references on the
Internet. It seems that every jeweler should figure out the answer himself
while working. So as an avid earrings wearer I prefer light weight earrings. Such that after I put them on I forget their existence. Earrings that weigh around 1-1.5 grams each are
very pleasant to wear. In general I would advise to stay below 3 grams per
earring.
Two more factors that influence the
actual pressure on the earlobe are the length of the earrings and the extent of
their movement / swinging. Long and swinging earrings create stronger pressure than short and
less mobile ones.
Some info can be found on the following
